James Holmes slaughtered theater-goers because he had a broken heart: prosecutor

Holmes was also into cannibalism and neuroscience, and he had a pet gerbil named Lucifer, the prosecutor in the case argued at the beginning of his trial for killing 12 in Colorado in 2012 at a Batman screening.

James Holmes, the man accused of killing a dozen people at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., that was screening the Dark Knight Rises, apparently did so because he wanted to make himself “feel better” after a romantic relationship ended, according to statements made at his trial.

Holmes, 27, finally had his trial begin this week, with prosecutors attempting to paint him as a monster who had also talked about cannibalism and neuroscience, and had a pet gerbil named Lucifer, according to a Mirror.co.uk report.

George Brauchler, the prosecutor, said he split up with a “first love,” which was “when he lost his last battle with biology.”

Brauchler further argued that Holmes had hoped to kill far more people than he actually did, and that he essentially tried to murder a whole host of people because he couldn’t deal with a breakup.

Holmes is accused of killing 12 people int he rampage and 70 more when he came into a theater during a crowded midnight screen of The Dark Knight Rises in July 2012, the new Batman film at the time.

Holmes also took some self-portraits that were shown at the trial, including ones with his hair dyed oranged and black contact lenses over his eyes, with guns visible in the photos in some cases. All of the pictures were found on his iPhone.

His defense attorney attempted to paint a picture of him as a man who was not entirely in control of his faculties, reading from a journal that suggested he was being controlled by dark thoughts.

Attorney Daniel King described Holmes as “insane” when he walked into the movie theater, and he “had become controlled by a disease.” King described Holmes as schizophrenic.
