Facebook beefs up Messenger with Video Calls

Facebook Messenger's 600 million users can launch video chats with the touch of a button.

Beginning Monday, Facebook’s Messenger app users can make video calls with the touch of a button. The social media company has added video chatting capability to the Messenger app, in a major move to challenge Apple Facetime, Google Hangout, and Skype in the video chat space.

Facebook’s nearly 600 million Messenger users can launch the video chat capability simply by tapping the video camera icon in the top right corner of the screen while using the app.  The service comes with broad functionality – it will work over both Wi-Fi and cellular networks, as well as on both iOS and Android phones.

“Messenger already offers people the ability to make voice calls to friends and loved ones around the world,” Facebook Messenger product head, Stan Chudnovsky, and engineering manager, Param Reddy, said in a blog post introducing the feature. “Video calling will expand Messenger’s real-time communication features.”

There is no doubt that video chatting is becoming increasingly popular. But it remains to be seen whether Messenger can gain a foothold in this increasingly crowded space.  Only time will tell whether users who already video chat with Facetime, Hangout, or Skype will make the switch.

Facebook is betting they will. It believes Messenger video chat has an edge over its competitors, since it lets users seamlessly switch between text and video from within the app, according to CNET. The social media company also claims that the service will offer the best quality calls across different data networks.

The launching of video chat additionally sheds light on Facebook’s long game. The social media company seemingly has higher goals than just being the place where people post photos and videos. Ultimately, it wants to be the central hub for all its users communications.
