Huge crash on New Jersey Turnpike leaves 1 dead

Few details are currently available on the wreck, but it involved numerous tractor trailers as well as a fully loaded bus, and many people were injured.

A person has been killed after a pileup involving 15 vehicles shut down the Southbound truck lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike.

New Jersey State Police had few details, only saying they would be able to provide more information later today, according to the Associated Press.

The pileup involved tractor-trailers and a bus, and at least one person was dead and several injured after the wreck. Other smaller vehicles were also involved in the crash. The bus was fully loaded at the time.

“Many people” were injured, according to the report, and the crash is currently under investigation. It apparently began when a tractor-trailer jackknifed near a service area shortly before 9:15 p.m.

Southbound car lanes, meanwhile, are open, according to the AP.

The crash may have had something to do with some wintry weather headed into the area, as a mix of rain and snow flurries descended in the region amidst below-freezing temperatures.

It is the third major storm in two weeks to hammer the Northeast, as parts of New England saw more than 2 feet of snow on Monday, which destroyed records and is wreaking havoc on travel in the region.

Boston itself had 22 inches of new snow after being buried by a storm in late January, and the storm is expected to last well into today in some areas.

New Jersey was not expected to be impacted as much, but officials new that a wintry mix might cause travel problems wherever it fell, even if accumulation wouldn’t be heavy.
