I suppose it could be both.
Today I heard a snapshot (if one can hear a snapshot—perhaps I heard a riff?) that tells so much of why the Trumpers wavelength is so very different from the loathe-Trumpers.
I was driving and listening to the Sirius Radio feed of MSNBC early this afternoon. They were in an absolute lather about the tragedy in Times Square. (I’ll bet the televised version had that as a banner across the top: Tragedy in Times Square—Has Terror Returned to US Soil?)
By this point anybody in any of the 7 boroughs with a plastic shield and pellet gun had pronounced the perpetrator to be under the influence, which was making the breaking news less terroristic sounding.
They dutifully had talking heads from police departments and counter terrorism groups from other parts of the country (I mean, obviously the NYPD and its brethren agencies were a little occupied at the moment) punditing dutifully about how nothing is certain until they’ve checked to see if the drunk guy has been radicalized by checking out his social media and browsing habits…
The host, sensing that common Americans saddled with a long drive and his smarter-than-you voice, were not thinking this needed crazy ass moment-by- moment, interview the guy who ate lunch a block away, heck—interview anybody for their thoughts, reactions, concerns coverage.
So this intuitive, fatherly host brought up this elephant in the room. I’m paraphrasing, but he actually said something like:
You know some folks outside of Washington DC and NYC—maybe California– in this country may not understand why we are covering this story with such fierceness and giving it so much time when other things are going on in the world today.
I swear this is not paraphrased:
Some Americans don’t understand the size and status of New York City. They don’t understand it’s one of the largest, most important cities in the world and has had a terrorist attack before and is considered a potential target of another one. Heck, some of them May Not have ever even been here.
Let the audacity, snobbishness, narcissism, ignorance of that string of comments sink in. I had two hours of highway (in rural America) to muse over his words.
I am not a Trumper—but is it any wonder when the self-proclaimed ‘Fourth Estate’ shows such disregard for those not on the coasts (us dumb middlers), that the appetite for a guy who eschews the Chief of Protocol answering his West Side door for the Columbian President and does it himself seems like somebody more aligned with them? At least somebody who doesn’t think he’s superior to them?
And if you check your military enlistment rolls, they burst with kids from the middle lands. They have heard the rumor we might need protecting.
I’m going to ask Siri to tell me about this New York City place.
