Pistorius is given bail and special release conditions after conviction

Oscar Pitorius is released on a $690 after being convicted of murdering his girlfriend.

Former South African Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius was granted bail and allowed special considerations following last week’s conviction for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Seenkamp. Pistorius addressed a bail hearing on Tuesday and told them that he was enrolled at the London School of Economics and that he planned on appealing his murder conviction.

The court granted bail in the sum of $690, according to The Los Angeles Times. He will also have to give up his passport. Pistorius is currently living at his uncle’s mansion but can leave during the day between 7AM and Noon. He also wears a monitoring electronic bracelet.

Last week, Pistorius was convicted of murdering his girlfriend by shooting through a bathroom door. The Supreme Court of Appeal in South Africa overturned a lower court ruling that had found Pistorius innocent when he claimed self defense telling the court during the trial that he thought it was an intruder in the bathroom and not his girlfriend.

If Pistorius’ appeal fails, he will return to court and be officially sentenced for his murder conviction. The $690 bail was set by the judge after Pistorius claimed that was all he could reasonably afford. He said that he currently has no job but intends to keep looking for full time employment.

Pistorius assured the court that he had no intention of fleeing and that he had finished taking a mandated anger management course. He believes that he will be exonerated on appeal and set free. The prosecution argued unsuccessfully for a rise in the bail as well as insisting that he simply reamain under house arrest at his uncle’s mansion with no opportunity to leave.

The judge in the case was not happy with the arrangements made by the prosecution and Pistorius’ lawyers but went along with the agreed upon conditions. The court will meet again on April 18,2016 to assess the progress of Pistorius’ appeal case for his conviction.
