SPORTS: Division 1 football playoff looks ready as pairings are announced

The second annual NCAA College Football Playoff pairings were announced on Sunday and the final four schools should come as no surprise to anyone.

The NCAA pairings for the four team playoff for the national champion in Division 1 football were announced on Sunday. Clemson will battle Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl and Michigan State will meet Alabama in the Cotton Bowl. This will be the second season for the Division 1 College Football Playoff. The championship game is schedule for January 11 between the two winners of the above games.

The following are the final standings for the competing teams with Clemson being ranked number one in the country followed by Alabama, Michigan State and Oklahoma, reports USA Today. Since there were no major upsets that happened during any of Saturday’s conference championship games, there seems to be little controversy about the final rankings and pairings.

Clemson claimed the top spot by virtue of finishing undefeated while the other three each finished up the season with one loss each. Clemson and Oklahoma have played each other only four times in their respective schools histories while Alabama and Michigan State has met only once.

Clemson (13-0) was the ACC champion having defeated North Carolina in the championship game on Saturday. In a true thriller, Michigan State came from behind to win a wild and crazy Big Ten championship from previously unbeaten Iowa which also happened on Saturday. The Big 12 champion, Oklahoma, had Saturday off as the conference doesn’t play a championship game. Alabama easily took down Florida in Saturday’s SEC championship game.

The Clemson and Oklahoma matchup will happen on New Year’s Eve with the Alabama and Michigan State matchup happening on New Year’s Day. This will be the first time Michigan State has ranked so highly as to secure a coveted playoff position and the Spartans actually crawled their way up from a 13th ranked position earlier in the season.

While the national rankings will officially be declared tomorrow, The final rankings according to the Amway Coaches Poll will be revealed later on Sunday.
