Finland looks to eliminate poverty by issuing every citizen $876 each month

The government of Finland has decided it will give each citizen a monthly stipend in an effort to pull itself out of a severe 3 year depression and to keep the country going well into the future.

The country of Finland has decided on a way in which it can help elimiate poverty in its country as well as to elimiate nearly all of the previous benefits of a welfare state. The government has decided to pay every citizen the equivilent of $876 a month. That will be for each month until the citizen dies.

The government is putting the finishing touches on its newfound solution and looks to begin the program as early into 2016 as possible, reports Mashable. When the new program, which is entitled Basic Income, is fully in place, Finland will be able to eliminate unemployment benefits, welfare programs, and other social welfare safety nets that have burdened the country for years.

The program would begin by paying everyone 550 Euros a month to begin. As in the United States, welfare benefits are distributed according to the specific income of each citizen. According to the new Basic Income initiative, every citizen in Finland would receive the same $876 every month regardless of the income generated by the individual or the family.

Finland has been trying to put together some sort of program that is going to jolt it out of the 3 year recession it has been floundering in. In addition, the nation’s unemployment rate has continued to hover at 10 percent for quite some time. The Finnish GDP is just about at the zero level and growth will be extremely slow even after the country manages to pull itself out of the recession according to government figures.

A nationwide poll this past spring showed that nearly 70 percent of the Finnish population is in favor of the new Basic Income program. For now, the country can cover this program with the revenues it has coming in every year. There will soon come a point however, when taxes may have to be raised in the future to continue to support and carry out the program.
