Republicans have argued that the U.S. and other nations have not done enough to stop the Islamic state from spreading in Iraq and Syria.

In the wake of the mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, 2016 presidential hopefuls expressed conflicting opinions on how to handle incidents like these in the future, whether it be through stronger gun laws, better intelligence methods, or a stronger fight against the Islamic State.

The Washington Post reports that Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton said that the U.S. should strengthen its fight against the Islamic state, while on ABC’s “This Week.” Clinton also drew attention to gun laws that make weapons accessible to fugitives, felons, and individuals on terrorism watch lists.

Jeb Bush also spoke on “This Week” saying, “The first impulse of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama is to have gun control. Lets have a strategy to take out ISIS there so we don’t have to deal with them here,”

On CBS’s “Face The Nation,” Donald Trump said that both the California and Paris attacks might have gone differently if victims were armed. During the Sunday morning interview, Trump said, “only the bad guys had the guns. So they were like sitting ducks, every one of them.”

Republicans have argued that the U.S. and other nations have not done enough to stop the Islamic state from spreading in Iraq and Syria. Saturday Sen. Ted Cruz vowed for further action in the region saying, “I don’t know if sand can glow in the dark, but we’re going to find out.”

Democrats continue to push for stricter gun legislation, despite failed attempts after other mass shootings. Congress voted against a bill Thursday that would deny the ability to purchase guns to those on the federal terrorism watch list.

President Obama will address the nation Sunday night from the Oval Office. The address is expected to call on Congress to move forward with stricter gun legislation, in light of the San Bernardino attack.
