The older brother of hip hop star Nicki Minaj was arrested earlier this week and formally charged with child rape.
The older brother of pop singer Nicki Minaj has been arrested in Long Island, New York, and charged with raping a child under the age of 13. Jelani Maraj, 37, was arraigned at a Long Island hospital on Thursday. The charges leveled against him were first degree rape and first degree sexual conduct against a child.
Maraj was initially arrested by police on Tuesday but an undisclosed medical problem sent him to the Nassau University Medical Center where he was arraigned 2 days later, according to USA Today. Maraj has secured the services of a New York City based attorney and it is uncertain if he has entered any sort of plea in the matter. Maraj’s attorney refused to comment on his client’s case. Maraj has been released on $100,000 bail.
According to released court documents, it is alleged that Maraj continuously raped a child younger than 13 years old between April and November of this year. The documents suggest that Maraj had raped the child repeatedly over that course of time. Certain sections of the court documents that were released had been purposely blacked out by the judge in charge of the case. The district attorney who will be trying the case has also refused to answer any questions from the media concerning the case.
Nicki Minaj, 32, whose real name is Onika Tamara Maraj, was born in Trinidad but was raised in Queens, New York, since she was 5 years old.
