The Germans announce they are ready to venture into the Syrian civil war

The German parliament overwhelmingly voted on Friday to help France in its mission to destroy the Islamic State in Syria.

In response to a plea from French president Francois Hollande, the German Parliament approved the sending of a non combat German mission to Syria to help battle the Islamic State. The vote by German lawmakers on Friday marked the entry of yet another major country becoming entangled in the Syrian civil war.

The French president had made a personal plea to the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, last month after the brutal attacks happened in Paris, according to The Los Angeles Times. The German parliament has agreed to send a navy frigate to the region as well as German fighter jets that will mostly be used for reconnaissance flights and missions.

The French wanted the Germans to help in their efforts to dislodge and destroy the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. The German parliament voted to approve the measure to go into Syria by a vote of 445-146. It was the Islamic State who took credit for the terrorist attacks in Paris last month that left 130 people dead.

The German frigate is already on its way to Syria to meet up with a French aircraft carrier and the Germans expect their fighter planes to reach the Incirlik Air Base in Turkey before the end of the year. After the parliament vote, the German defense minister stated the usual and typical rhetoric associated with such an action.

The Germans plan on sending at least 6 Tornado warplanes and even though the parliament approved the use of 1,200 combat troops, the Germans are adamant that they will not participate in combat. The troops will be provided for support of various missions and will likely be based in Turkey.

Chancellor Merkel was firm in her statement that there will be no German soldiers used in combat in Syria. The Syrian civil war has been going on for more than 4 years and nearly 300,000 people have already been killed by the violence.
