The National Abortion Federation sent advisories to abortion-providing facilities, in an attempt to make sure staff are prepared in the event of an attack.
Planned Parenthood clinics across the U.S. are increasing safety measures, and reviewing emergency escape plans following the deadly shooting at a Colorado Springs clinic, last week. ABC News reports that, although armed security and bulletproof glass are commonplace for clinics that offer abortion services, police say they will be adding patrol units to clinics. The units will help guard the facilities against anyone attempting to imitate last week’s attacks. The shootout at a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood killed three and injured nine.
Planned Parenthood has over 400 clinics across the country. The attacks have prompted reflection from the organizations employees, over the dangers they potentially face daily. CEO for Planned Parenthood in the Rocky Mountain region Vicki Cowart says, “There’s a vitriol, there’s a hate speech in our country going on right now that could be causing more violence than we might otherwise see.”
The clinics remain open and will continue to offer services to patients despite the increased security concerns. The only exception is the Colorado Springs location, as it was severely damaged in the shootout last Friday.
Robert Lewis Dear is accused of opening fire on the Planned Parenthood clinic, which led to an hour-long standoff with police. The area surrounding the clinic was placed on lock-down until an all-clear was received from authorities.
In September, a memo was sent by the FBI to clinics advising, “it is likely criminal or suspicious incidents will continue to be directed against reproductive health care providers, their staff and facilities.”
The National Abortion Federation sent advisories to abortion-providing facilities, in an attempt to make sure staff are prepared in the event of an attack. Clinics typically have emergency plans, but the recent events have prompted staff to be more proactive about checking cameras, and ensuring locks and alarms are working.
Since 1977, there have been 11 murders and over 220 attacks at abortion facilities in the United States. In Claremont, N.H., an abortion facility was vandalized recently by someone wielding a hatchet.
