The popular mayor of Juneau, Alaska, was found dead in his home as rumors about what happened continue to circulate all across the city.
The recently elected mayor of Juneau, Alaska, was found dead in his home on Monday. Stephen “Greg” Fisk, 70, was discovered by his son, who immediately called the police. Rumors of what happened to him began to spread across the Alaskan capital city and throughout the state.
The Juneau police department stated that they were aware of the rumors surrounding Fisk’s death, which include the possibility that Fisk was attacked and killed in his home, according to ABC News. The Juneau police declared him dead at the scene and the body was removed so that an autopsy could be performed.
Fisk had won the mayoral election back in October, defeating incumbent mayor, Merrill Sanford, by a rather wide margin. The chief of police for Juneau, Bryce Johnson, immediately responded to the rumors that Fisk may have been attacked in his home. Johnson publicly stated that the Juneau police department was aware of the rumors and called it speculation for the moment. Johnson stated that the cause of Fisk’s death is unknown at this time and they will await the results of the upcoming autopsy.
The chief further speculated that there could be several reasons for the death of Fisk. The results of the autopsy was said to be due in a couple of days. Chief Johnson, however, did state that he was ruling out the possibility of suicide. Johnson also said that there was no sign at all of forced entry to Fisk’s home.
Fisk was praised both city wide and state wide for the positive and clean campaign he had run against the incumbent mayor Sanford.
Fisk had been heavily involved in Alaska’s fishing industry and had worked as a consultant. Many people are grieving his death as they saw him as an opportunity for Juneau to grow and expand. He is said to have had some grand visions for both the city and for Alaska.
Juneau is located along the southern Alaskan panhandle hugging the border with Canada and the city currently has a population of 32,000 people.
