In October Imprimis announced the development of a Daraprim alternative, offered at $99 for a 100-pill bottle.
Imprimis Pharmaceuticals partnered with Express Scripts, who will distribute their $1 alternative to Daraprim. Daraprim is the infection-fighting pill that received national attention after its price was increased by 5,000 percent by its manufacturer, Turing Pharmaceuticals.
CNN reports that Express Scripts will be offering the less-expensive alternative to patients as early as this week. The alternative drug is made of pyrimethamine and leucovorin, with an anticipated cost of $1. Turing Pharmaceutical’s Daraprim costs over $700 per pill.
The drugs, Daraprim, and Imprimis’ alternative, are used to fight a specific type of infection, typically by cancer and AIDS patients. Daraprim has been on the market for over 60 years. However, after Turing Pharmaceuticals increased the price from under $15 to $750, the public opinion of Turing Pharmaceuticals, and CEO Martin Shkreli, was not favorable.
In the past, hospitals were offered Daraprim at 50 percent of list price. Hospitals use the drug to treat toxoplasmosis encephalitis with a standard dosage of between 50 mg and 75 mg per day for between one to three weeks. From there the drug can be administered with a dosage of 25 mg a day, for four to five weeks. The increase in price of Daraprim spiked toxoplasmosis treatment as high as $36,700. In October, Imprimis announced the development of a Daraprim alternative, offered at $99 for a 100-pill bottle.
Express Scripts plans to work with the HIV Medicine Association, Infectious Disease Society of America and other organizations to educate physicians on the merits of prescribing the alternative, rather than the costly Daraprim drug. Express Scripts is the largest pharmacy benefits management company in the United States.
