University of Chicago cancels classes after FBI warns school of gun violence

Classes on Monday are canceled at the University of Chicago after the FBI told school officials that there would be possible gun violence on campus.

The University of Chicago announced on Sunday that they would be canceling all classes at its main campus at Hyde Park on Monday. School administrator’s made the decision after receiving a call from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The FBI told the school officials that they had reason to suspect gun violence on Monday at the university.

The FBI stated that someone had made a threat against the University of Chicago, but gave no further details with regard to how they learned of it or who may be a potential suspect, according to The Washington Post. The FBI just said that someone had made a threat to use a gun at the university on Monday.

The president of the University of Chicago, Robert Zimmer, sent out an official email to every student at the university. He told everyone not to come to class and to stay inside as they returned from the Thanksgiving Day holiday break. Zimmer went on to say in the email that the FBI told them that someone had sent an email saying they were going to start shooting at 10 a.m. Central time at the university’s quad section of the campus.

Zimmer said that he was keeping in constant touch with the FBI, and that he would increase the armed police presence at the university. Zimmer stated that the University of Chicago Medical Center would still be open to serve patients and staff, but that there would be additional security. Zimmer stated that classes and activities should return to normal on Tuesday.

Colleges and universities around the country have been a on edge of late. Last week racist threats were made at Western Washington University, so the school officials decided to close down and cancel classes. On Sunday an employee at Ohio State University killed himself after vandalizing property at the campus. And on Sunday night students at Moorpark College in California were arrested after they brought replica fake weapons to a movie being shown on campus.
