Russian Airstrikes Continue to Attack Syrian Town of Ariha Leaving 18 Dead

Russian warplanes have attacked a small town in northern Syria, causing tremendous damage to insurgent forces as well as the civilian populace.

Russian warplanes launched more attacks against the northern town of Ariha in Syria on Sunday. The town is strategic and is being held by insurgents and rebels aligned with the Islamic State. The Islamic State doesn’t currently control the town but are using alliances to capture key positions.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, based in England, has reported that the strikes have left 18 dead and many dozens wounded in the attacks, according to The Washington Post. One report has the airstrikes landing in the center of the town, causing heavy destruction at a large open air market. The Syrian Observatory also reported that at least three buildings were leveled in the attacks.

Conflicting reports coming out of the chaotic destruction going on in Syria tends to be rather commonplace. Ariha Today, a Facebook page for the town, has claimed that over 40 people have been killed and over 70 severely injured. Russia has been carrying out air attacks since the end of September as Russian forces look to keep the current Syrian president, Bashar Assad, in power and destroy the Islamic State in the process.

Some amateur video of the aftermath of the attack has been posted. It mostly shows many wounded lying in the streets or in makeshift clinics with the destruction of the town all around them. Emergency workers were trying to tend to the wounded as ambulances soon arrived on the scene also.

The Russians continue to claim that they are looking to strike Islamic State targets so as to reestablish Assad’s power. However, many of the air attacks that have been launched and carried out by the Russians have attacked areas of Syria where the Islamic State really has no strong presence.

The Syrian civil war has been raging for over four years and nearly 300,000 people have been killed in the fighting.
