Planned Parenthood shooting suspect has history of violent behavior

Shooter had a history of issues with neighbors, who described him as someone who "complained about everything."

Details about the man accused of shooting inside a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood clinic on Friday have come to light following his surrender to police. USA Today reports that the suspect, Robert Lewis Dear, lived in the rural town of Hartsel, Col., which is located approximately 90 minutes west of Colorado Springs. Dear had a reputation of unsettling run-ins with neighbors and issues with law enforcement in his previous homes in North and South Carolina.

Dear lived in a small shack without electricity or running water. A former neighbor, James Russell from Black Mountain, N.C., said, “If you talked to him, nothing was very cognitive,” adding that topics were often “all over the place.”

Another neighbor, who wished to not be identified, described Dear as “the kind of person you had to watch out for.” The neighbor feared future retaliation from Dear or his family after speaking out. “He was a very weird individual,” the neighbor told The Washington Post.

Neighbors say Dear kept a dog as a pet. The dog appeared to be in poor condition, prompting neighbors to call animal control. Police records show that Dear had a history of arrests ranging from domestic violence to animal cruelty. Dear’s former wife called law enforcement on Dear in 1997, reporting that he had assaulted her, then locked her out of their house. She divorced Dear in 2000.

In 2002 Dear was accused by a neighbor of shooting his dog with a pellet gun. In 2004 he threatened to “do bodily harm” to another neighbor.

The Planned Parenthood shooting on Friday left three dead and nine wounded. A police officer was among those who lost their lives. Whether or not Dear had a connection to Planned Parenthood has not been determined, however neighbors describe Dear as a man who “complained about everything.”

FBI agents arrived at Dear’s residence in North Carolina on Saturday in an attempt to gather more clues.
