Prosecutors say boy was lured from playground to an alley before his death.
A man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a 9-year-old boy on Friday. Police say the boy was lured from a playground and was shot in the head because of his father’s gang ties.
The New York Times reports that the suspect is Corey Morgan. Morgan has an extensive criminal history and is a gang member. Two other men, including one currently in jail for an unrelated gun offence, are suspects in the shooting. The boy, Tyshawn Lee, was shot in an alley near his grandmother’s home on Nov. 2.
According to prosecutors, Morgan allegedly wanted revenge following an October shooting that killed his brother and harmed his mother. The shooting was part of a lengthy gang feud. Morgan’s attorney denies his involvement in Lee’s death.
The roles of the three suspects has not been determined. The three men were confirmed to be part of the same gang. Morgan and the two others allegedly went looking for targets every day since the October shooting, with Morgan saying he “was going to kill grandmas, mamas, kids, and all,” Morgan was denied bond.
The three suspects found Tyshawn playing on swings at a playground, according to prosecutors. Allegedly, one of the men approached Tyshawn, dribbled a basketball with him, handed the ball back, then led him down an alley. Tyshawn and the suspect were followed by the other two in an SUV.
The boy was shot at close range, multiple times. According to the autopsy report, one bullet cut through his hand, as if his hands were extended to block the gunshots. The weapon used in the murder has not been recovered. Police believe only one suspect fired a weapon, as all the bullet casings found at the scene were found to be from the same gun.
