Baby discovered in nativity scene at a Queens church

Detectives are seeking a woman caught on camera, thought to be the baby's mother.

An hours-old newborn baby was found Monday inside a nativity scene at a Queens church. A woman was caught on video inside the church with the baby wrapped in a towel and the umbilical cord still attached. In the video she is seen leaving without the baby.

The New York Times reports that detectives were searching for the woman, thought to be the child’s mother, Tuesday. The baby was discovered at around 1 p.m. inside the Holy Jesus Child Church by a custodian returning from his lunch break. The custodian, Jose Moran, heard the sound of a baby crying and found the newborn, according to police.

The baby was taken to Jamaica Hospital Center, where they determine that the child was born only four to five hours earlier. New York, like many other states, has safe haven laws which allow parents to anonymously leave unwanted children in a specified location without fear of legal repercussion.

According to officials, a church falls under the places covered by the safe haven law. However the parent is required to notify someone that the child is there, or directly put the child in the care of someone on-site.

Police have not released the video of the woman leaving the child behind inside the church. Father Heaune, of Holy Jesus Child Church said that the baby “seemed very healthy and was said to be in stable condition.”
