Searches Continue in Locked Down Brussels as Abdeslam Remains Free

Brussels remains an army and police controlled city as Belgian authorities continue the hunt for one of the masterminds behind the Paris attacks.

The search for the most wanted criminal in Europe, Salah Abdeslam, continued all weekend and into Monday in Brussels. The city remains in the hands of the Belgian Army as schools and public transportation remains closed. People have been advised to stay indoors and not gather in public places by the Belgian government.

Belgian soldiers searched at least 20 different properties overnight into early Monday with no luck finding Abdeslam. Abdeslam, 26, is consider one of the mastermind planers behind the attacks in Paris that left 130 dead. Abdeslam’s brother was also there and blew himself up during the attacks, reports NBC News.

The government of Belgium said it had no idea when things will return to normal and the lock down will be lifted. Over 1,000 police and soldiers have been assigned to the search for Abdeslam. In the five search raids that happened on Monday soldiers and police detained 21 people for questioning. When asked why they had not captured Abdeslam yet, the Belgian Interior Ministry said that they believe he has a huge support system in the area that is helping him to remain at large.

The Belgian government keeps telling its people that they are expecting an attack in Brussels like the one that happened in Paris and that is the reason for the lock down continuing without any clear end. Brussels is a city of nearly 2 million residents. Most residents of the city who have been interviewed are not thrilled with soldiers in the streets and with having their personal freedoms infringed upon. Most hope things will return to normal soon.

Brussels has been a major focus point in the hunt for those responsible for the attacks in Paris. The Molenbeek section of Brussels is known the world over as a hub for fanatical and jihadist activity. Authorities believe that Abdeslam was going to hide out in Molenbeek until he made the connections and gathered the resources to flee to Syria.
