A gunfight erupted between two groups in a city park on Sunday night. Around 500 people had gathered to watch the filming of a new music video.
At least 16 people were shot on Sunday night in a shooting spree that erupted at a city park in New Orleans. At least 10 people have been hospitalized with others requiring medical assistance from injuries incurred during the shooting. Hundreds of city residents had gathered in the park to view the filming of a new music video and the New Orleans police are asking citizens for help in locating potential suspects.
Ambulances were immediately called to Bunny Friend Park and playground in the Upper Ninth Ward of New Orleans. Officials said there were about 500 people who had gathered in the park for the event, reports The New York Times. The Mayor of New Orleans, Mitch Landrieu, said that it was a difficult thing for police to have prevented. In a public statement, the mayor said, “At the end of the day, it’s really hard to police against a bunch of guys who decide to pull out guns and settle disputes with 300 people between them.”
Mayor Landrieu went on to say that he was infuriated and that, “it’s just insane to put the lives of this many innocent people at risk.”
Officials report that at around 6 p.m. on Sunday night, hundreds of people had gathered in Bunny Friend Park to watch a music video being filmed. It was around that time that a gunfight erupted between at least two people in the crowd of 500 or so people. The police had to run from a couple of blocks away where they were on duty at a parade.
The shooting aftermath was chaos, witnesses reported. People’s belongings were strewn everywhere. The police stated that the music video crew didn’t have a permit to make the video in the park. Witnesses reported that the gunfight erupted between two groups who were firing at each other and then running from the park chasing one another in a continuation of the dispute.
