Three new cases of ebola found in Africa

Doctors say boy had no contact with survivors of previous Ebola outbreak.

Just two months ago, Liberia was thought to be free of the Ebola virus. However, officials reported Friday that three family members have contracted the virus.

The New York Times reports that the recent outbreak is being referred to as the “fourth wave.” A 15-year-old boy was admitted to John F. Kennedy Medical Center, in Liberia’s capital of Monrovia, with Ebola symptoms including as fever, weakness, and bleeding. The boy was isolated in the hospital to prevent the virus from spreading. Sources say the boy started showing symptoms last week, and began treatment for Ebola on Wednesday.

On Thursday Ebola tests came back positive for the boy, his father, and his 8-year-old brother. At least seven health care workers may have come in contact with the boy without the essential equipment needed to prevent the virus from spreading.

The mother and two other brothers are being tested for Ebola, and have been admitted for treatment. On Friday, two people unrelated to the family were admitted under suspicions of more Ebola infections.

The school the boy attended, Living in Christ International Ministry School, set up hand-washing stations and distributed information on how to avoid Ebola. Whether or not the boy was in school while infected is unclear. According to the school, he had not been in attendance for over three weeks. Others say that the father told them that the boy came home from school sick, was cared for over the weekend, and went back to school on Monday.

Health officials suggest that the school is purposely saying the boy was not in school, in an effort to not appear irresponsible when dealing with Ebola cases. Doctors say the boy had no known contact with a previous Ebola survivor.
