Mastermind of Paris Attacks is Killed as Belgian Police Make Sweeping Raids

The master planner behind the attacks in Paris is believed dead. His remains were identified after a raid on a house in a suburb of Paris.

On Thursday, Belgian police began a sweeping search of the city of Brussels with seven raids as the hunt stays alive for Paris attackers. Meanwhile, in Paris, police believe that the mastermind behind the Paris attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, was killed in raids conducted on Wednesday in a Paris suburb.

French authorities have confirmed Abaaoud’s death but are unsure how he died. They suspect he may have blown himself up, which is making identification difficult. Police said they did palm, finger and sole prints in their efforts to properly identify the remains. The raid was conducted by French soldiers. The commandos’ attack was so forceful that a whole floor of the building collapsed. It was from that rubble that they pulled bodies and attempted identification. All that was left after the commando raid was body parts.

The French have told the Belgians that a chemical attack can’t be ruled out and the government of Belgium is poised to enact what they are calling anti-terror acts, according to The New York Times. The Belgian government has already warned that these new “security” measures will be strict. France has also extended its state of emergency until February of next year. The government also invoked sweeping new powers that it has yet to reveal.

The Belgian Parliament has stepped up its anti-terrorism programs which includes the power to shut down any Muslim mosque that is preaching what the politicians refer to as “hate speech.” The government also extended the time someone may be held without being charged with a crime from 24 hours to three days.

The Belgian government also declared that it would upgrade technology and communication and also broaden the powers of police to wiretap private individuals in their homes. If a citizen is suspected of having jihadist ties and is considering going overseas to join with the Islamic State, they will be apprehended and forced to wear a security bracelet around their ankle. France is thinking about doing this also.
