Seven Hour Raid in Paris Suburb Targets Masterminds; 2 Dead, 7 Arrests

A raid in an Paris suburb that lasted for seven hours ended with two dead and seven arrested. While the dead and arrested have yet to be identified, it is believed that the masterminds of the Paris attacks may have been among them.

A 7-hour raid by police in a Paris suburb led to a shootout in which two people were killed. Police took into seven people into custody but they have not been identified. It is believed, however, that the masterminds of the Paris attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud and Salah Abdeslam, were in the apartment. It was formerly believed that the pair had been on the run and were hiding out in Belgium or Syria.

While the dead have not been identified, one was a woman who had blown herself up with a bomb. The raid lasted seven hours as the suspects decided to battle it out with police rather than be taken alive, according to The Huffington Post. Crowds began to form around the battle and there were at least seven explosions as both side tried to work every advantage they could.

The raid began at 4:30 a.m. Paris time and ended at 11:30 a.m. The suspected mastermind and planner of the Paris attacks, Abaaoud, 28, is well known to the world’s police and intelligence agencies. He is considered one of the Islamic States top commanders and is near the top of the command chain. In October, he had been located and was the target of various air strikes.

Abdeslam, 26, is the alleged leader of the attacks at the Paris nightclub where 89 people were killed. It has been reported that he fled Paris in a rented car with Belgian plates and it is believed he was headed back to the Brussels suburb of Molenbeek. Molenbeek has been a European terrorist center for years and is well known to the world’s intelligence agencies.

The police began the search that ended in the raid and shootout on Tuesday when leads brought them to the apartment house that is just a mile away from the football stadium that had also been the target of an attack and at which the French president, Francois Hollande, was attending a football match. A football match scheduled for Tuesday between Germany and the Netherlands at the stadium was canceled after someone telephoned in a potential bomb attack.
