The sensational trial of the Facebook Murder continues as the prosecution wrapped up its case on Wednesday. The 2013 alleged murder of a 27-year-old woman by her husband showed some things out of the ordinary. Pictures of her dead body were later posted by her killer on his Facebook page.
The prosecution wrapped up its arguments on Wednesday in the infamous Facebook murder case. The case is being prosecuted in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and the prosecution’s case created a huge sensation in court as the county medical examiner took the stand.
The incident took place in 2013 between Jennifer Alfonso, 27 and her husband Derek Medina, 33. Medina has claimed self defense in the eventual death of Alfonso and the prosecution called Miami-Dade County medical examiner, Dr. Emma Lew, to the stand on Wednesday, according to ABC News.
Dr. Lew concluded on questioning that she didn’t think Alfonso was actually fighting with Medina when she was killed. Medina has claimed self defense and originally told the police that Alfonso was pushing and shoving him in the kitchen of the apartment and had been threatening him with a knife.
The medical examiner testified that the shots fired from a gun that eventually killed Alfonso all came from above her. Dr. Lew said that Alfonso had defensive wounds on her arms and the trajectory of the shots, upon forensic examination, were consistent with shots fired from an elevated position. Alfonso was shot eight times in both her body and her face. She died from the gunshot wounds.
The prosecutor asked Dr. Lew if her training and experience was telling her that Alfonso was likely on her knees when she was shot to death. Dr. Lew answered that it was and that all of the forensic evidence point toward Alfonso being on her knees when she was killed. Medina claimed that Alfonso was trying to attack him with her left arm but Dr. Lew said that the evidence was conclusive showing that Alfonso would not have been able to even use her left arm at that time.
The defense will be up on Thursday to question witnesses and there is a video of Medina in which he admits to police that he killed his wife. He claimed that she was attacking him and that he killed her in self defense. The defense strategy has not been revealed with regard to whether Medina will testify in his own behalf.
Medina could face life if convicted. He posted a photo of Alfonso’s bloodied and dead body on his Facebook page to show his family, he said, how he was a victim and battered husband for many years. The defense intends to show that Alfonso was an alcoholic and drug addict as well as a Satan worshipper. It also plans to call their 10-year-old daughter to the stand to tell the jury about the years of volatility in the relationship.
