SPORTS: Houston Hands Cincinnati First Loss in a Game of Mistakes, 10-6

NFL NEWS: The Houston Texans continued to thwart the Cincinnati Bengals as they handed the Bengals their first loss of the season. It was a defensive struggle all night long as neither team could muster any offense.

The Houston Texans (4-6) delivered the Cincinnati Bengals (8-1) their first loss of the season in a hard fought defensive struggle on Monday night, 10-6. The Bengals played their worst football of the season and just couldn’t overcome mounting mistakes and quarterback Andy Dalton’s subpar night.

The Cincinnati loss has left only two undefeated teams left in the league; the Carolina Panthers and the defending Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots. From the start, Cincinnati simply couldn’t get their offense going at all, according to USA Today. The offensive line couldn’t hold back the Houston rush and they were flagged too many times for penalties that including everything from false starts to holding.

The Bengals had absolutely no running game all night and Dalton was terrible. Time and again he missed open receivers or simply threw the ball away or over their heads. A few times Bengal receivers were wide open, practically standing all by themselves, and Dalton would still miss them.

The teams swapped field goals all game long and the game stood at 6-3 in the fourth quarter with the Bengals barely holding on to the lead. Early in the fourth quarter, Houston quarterback Brian Hoyer went down with what appeared to be a concussion. He left the game and was replaced by backup T.J. Yates.

While the vaunted Bengals defense continued to hold up all night long, they came up short in the fourth quarter as Yates put together a Houston drive that was capped by a touchdown pass to seal the win for the luckless Texans. The Cincinnati offense, time and time again, had to start a drive from deepĀ in their own territory as even their special teams couldn’t get them any decent field position.

It was a rather shocking loss for Cincinnati as the Bengals had been playing well all season long. Losing to a team that was clearly inferior to them may set the tone for the rest of the season and even heading into the playoffs.
