New England and Carolina remained unbeaten on Sunday while Peyton Manning set the new NFL record for most passing yards in a career. Manning, however, got benched in the third quarter after setting the record.
The New England Patriots (9-0) still found a way to win despite playing perhaps their worst football of the year as a last second field goal clinched it for them over the New York Giants (5-5), 27-26. The Patriots defense struggled mightily, especially in the secondary, as time and again Giant receivers were wide open. Sometime Giants quarterback Eli Manning found them while other times his throws went way wide or over their heads. The Giants kicked four field goals but no one beats New England by just kicking field goals.
The Giants had a precarious 26-24 lead with less than two minutes to play. With no time outs, Tom Brady methodically marched the Patriots on a 44 yard drive that led to a Stephen Gostkowski 54 yard field for the win with just one second remaining on the clock. Gostkowski is a perfect 21-21 in field goals this year with four being made from more than 50 yards out.
Cam Newton continues to lead the Carolina Panthers (9-0) to perfection as they took down the struggling Tennessee Titans (2-7) in convincing fashion on Sunday, 27-10. Newton was perfect with his first 11 passes and he also ran for another touchdown, reports The Los Angeles Times.
Newton ended up going 21 of 26 for 217 yards and he threw for a touchdown. The Panthers defense continues to improve and stay solid as they held the Titans scoreless for the entire second half. With this win, the Panthers have now won a league leading 13 games in a row. For the hapless Titans, however, it was their tenth loss in a row at home.
Peyton Manning set the NFL record for most passing yards in a career on Sunday despite his Denver Broncos being blown out by the Kansas City Chiefs, 29-13. Manning passed Bret Favre on the all time passing yards list. The day, however, was not all that celebratory for the future hall of famer. He only threw for a total of 35 yards in the game and threw four interceptions. He was actually benched by the Denver head coach in the third quarter of the game.
