Officer who shot church drummer Corey Jones fired

Officer's employment with City of Palm Beach Gardens ended Wednesday evening, according to a statement.

Officials for the City of Palm Beach Gardens announced Thursday that the officer who shot and killed church drummer Corey Jones in his broken down car has been fired.

USA Today reports that a statement issued by the city said that the city has been “cautiously and meticulously considering the employment status of Officer Nouman Raja.” The statement continues saying that Officer Raja “…has been terminated from employment effective Wednesday November 11th,2015 at 5:00 PM”

The victim, Corey Jones, was shot in the early hours of Oct. 18, while waiting for his disabled vehicle to be towed. According to the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department, Officer Raja stepped out of his vehicle to investigate the vehicle he thought was abandoned. Raja said he was confronted by “an armed subject,” who he shot dead. A gun was found at the scene, according to authorities.

An independent criminal investigation is looking further into the shooting, according to the statement. Jones was a licensed gun owner, and purchased a gun a year and a half ago for protection. Jones, as a musician, played many late-night gigs and often carried around expensive equipment, according to his sister. The gun was stolen, and Jones had just finished paying off a replacement three days prior to his death.

Officers in Palm Beach Gardens are not required to wear body cams, nor are any of the city’s squad cars equipped with dashboard cameras.
