Opposition forces are gathering to tackle the challenge of allowing guns on college campuses even in states that have open carry laws. Many state legislatures have already begun the process of allowing that to happen.
On Thursday several major national organizations and associations escalated the fray that has been building for several weeks. Many state legislatures around the country have been reviewing their open carry gun laws, as many groups and organizations favor a more well-armed citizenry. Others, however, think it a bad idea to allow firearms on American college and university campuses.
Many state legislatures are considering laws that will allow student, faculty, and workers to carry concealed firearms while they are on a college campus, according to ABC News. Some national groups who claim to represent college officials and teachers claim that they are working against such proposals in the states. They claim that school campuses should be as safe as possible for everyone who works, lives, and attends there. No one has argued with that statement just with the possible means of attaining “safe.” The shootings at the community college in Oregon last month have simply been sparking the flames of a national debate that has been going on for quite some time.
The National Rifle Association has also entered the fight. The NRA has always believed, and has been backed by certain evidence and statistics, that a well-armed populace is the number one deterrent to crime. The NRA believes such random shootings and violence will not happen if those who wish to carry out such violence have to stop and think about an armed response to their actions.
The organizations representing colleges and teachers have been wringing their hands over what to do about shootings on college campuses. None of them has yet to come up with a solution other than to stand firmly against citizens arming themselves for protection. Florida is considering letting their gun owners bring their weapons onto campuses and Texas recently passed legislation allowing guns on their campuses.
There are seven other states in the nation that allow guns to be carried on college campuses and many states that have open carry laws are thinking of revising them to allow carrying on campuses.
