College Students Set to Boycott Classes to Bring Attention to Student Debt

Thousands of American college students from throughout the country hope to walk out of classes on Thursday. They are looking to call attention to the crushing student debt that plagues America.

College students all across the United States have vowed to boycott classes on Thursday in an effort to bring attention to the crushing amount of debt that continues to plague many Americans. They also want the walkout to bring attention to the need for tuition-free public colleges and universities.

The boycott and student demonstrations seem to be in harmony with the strike that fast food workers staged just two days ago all over the country, reports Reuters. It seems the college students of America were inspired by the walk out of the fast food workers and other low wage earners on Tuesday. The students hope that their efforts, too, will raise national awareness with regard to the brutal student debt many are carrying, and will continue to carry on into adulthood, and for the realization that something must be done to relieve the crippling burden.

Thursday’s boycott of classes and protests are schedule to happen at universities and colleges across the country and will affect both coasts. Some have dubbed Thursday’s student actions as the Million Student March. It is a bold projection an unlikely to become such a huge event but many expect a strong turnout. Many of the students have signed up for focus groups featured on Facebook from many areas of the country.

The main organizers of the movement demand that higher education, which seems almost mandatory today, be free. They are no longer willing to tolerate the hardship and debt a college education brings with it these days. The ultimate success of the protests for the organizers would be the cancellation of all student loan debt, the institution of free tuition at public colleges and universities and the raising of the minimum wage to $15 per hour for those who work at colleges and universities throughout the country.

Current student loan debt in America currently stands at $1.2 trillion.
