NFL NEWS: Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Coutler set a new Bears record and rallied his team from two touchdowns behind in the fourth quarter for an inspiring win over the struggling San Diego Chargers on Monday night.
On Monday night the Chicago Bears (3-5) rallied from two touchdowns behind going into the fourth quarter to take a thriller over the struggling San Diego Chargers (2-7), 22-19. The Bears quarterback, Jay Cutler, was the architect of the rally and ended up throwing for two touchdowns on the night. This gives him 139 touchdown passes in his career with the Bears, a new Bears record.
The Bears are no strangers to tight games this season. The last three games Chicago has played in have seen them decided by a field goal or less, according to USA Today. Cutler went 27 of 40 with 345 and also had one picked off to go along with his two TD passes. Cutler remarked after the game that winning games in the fourth quarter has been tough for the Bears all season long and it felt good to pull one out for a change.
Cutler led the Bears on a final drive after the Chargers had kicked a field goal to go ahead in the game, 19-14. It was a brilliant march of 80 yards on 10 plays that culminated with a touchdown pass to Zach Miller. The San Diego Chargers continue to struggle under coach Mike McCoy as this loss to Chicago was their fifth straight. San Diego’s exceptional quarterback, Phillip Rivers, was disgusted by the teams fifth loss in a row. Rivers finished up the game, which should have been a Chargers win, going 26 of 42 for 280 yards.
It has been a weak defense and a team that is prone to making foolish mistakes. Rivers had thrown a touchdown pass to Antonio Gates late in the game but had it called back when a Chargers offensive lineman was flagged for being an ineligible receiver downfield. That could have given the Chargers a win they have been desperate for. The Bears struggled for the entire first half but the Chargers just couldn’t seem to put them, and the game, away.
