Russian Athletes Use Performance Enhancing Drugs With Approval of State

The World Anti-Doping Agency announced on Monday that there is a pervasive culture of doping among Russia's athletes. The report was released in Geneva and called for immediate action.

A report released on Monday by the World Anti-Doping Agency has confirmed that Russian athletes on all levels of competition have been doping and using performance enhancing drugs. The report was issued on Monday in Geneva.

Much of the premier athletes in Russia, including Olympians, have been participating in a culture that approves getting what ever edge they feel they need to win, reports The New York Times. The agency has recommended that the governing bodies of the track and field world and the Olympics consider suspending Russian athletes from competing on the world stage. That includes next year’s Olympic Games at Rio de Janeiro.

The report declared that the practice was due to an old mindset left over from the Soviet Union and the days when the East Germans were known to take performance-enhancing drugs to give them an edge in competition. It is part of the sports and athletic culture in Russia, the report states, and is sanctioned by the state and unlikely to change without severe admonishment from the rest of the world.

The report sites not just the athletes but the trainers, coaches and physicians involved. The report reveals how during the last Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, payoffs were made that hid tests and alerted athletes to the days and times when they were to be tested. This is direct violation of certain codes that demand that all drug tests be of a spontaneous nature without previous announcement.

During the Sochi Games, Russian law enforcement personnel were in the labs and were said to be an intimidating presence for the lab workers. The lab workers knew why they were there and the report concludes that since the Russian Federation funds and sponsors all of that, then it, too, is complicit in the pervasive drug culture.

The report issued on Monday took 10 months to investigate and prepare. The investigation was sparked by a documentary shown on German television in 2014 that detailed the pervasive drug culture among Russian athletes.
