Jillian Di Bernardo has written a Facebook post to look for someone with type "O" blood who is willing to save her life by donating part of his or her liver to her.
28-year-old Jillian Di Bernardo, from Ontario, Canada, is facing death because she is waiting for her name to get to the top of the liver donor list. She is attempting to save her live by posting her story to Facebook and asking for someone’s help. She is a hairstylist in London, Ontario and in 2010 was diagnosed with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HTT). This is a rare disease that leads to abnormal blood vessel formation, even in organs.
Even though she is very much in need of a liver donation, Di Bernardis low on the list and has not been moved up. It has also been hard for her to find a live donor or someone willing to give her part of their liver. When she found out last week that her good friend was not a match she decided to share her story on Facebook.
The donor system in Canada works on a point system, and because of complications with Di Bernardo’s HTT, her score does not show how sick she really is, meaning that she is not a priority on the donor list. In Canada there is a shortage of donors in relation to the number of people who need a donation. This has lead Canadian hospitals to accept live donors, specifically for the liver.
Di Bernardo told Buzzfeed it has been hard for her to share her story because she is usually a very private person. She needs a willing, healthy, type “O” donor. The donor would need to have tests done to determine whether they are a match. The part of the liver that is removed from the donor would grow back. She told Buzzfeed that she wants to find someone who is really willing to give the liver for the right reasons.
The response to Facebook post has been monumental and her inbox is full of responses from willing donors. Di Bernardo is replying to everyone she possibly can in hopes that if they cannot donate to her than they can help someone else who needs a donation. She told Buzzfeed she is not confident she will find a donor because of her Facebook post.
