Odd light patterns from a star system 1,500 light years from Earth have been puzzling astronomers for the past month. Now ongoing research is looking for clues into what, or who, might be making the strange celestial twinkling.
The SETI Institute, a scientific group leading the search for extraterrestrial life, is exploring the possibilities of radio transmissions from the star, according to GeekWire. No radio waves have yet been detected from the star in the constellation Cygnus, known as KIC 8462852, but the SETI scientists say it may be too soon to say with certainty what is causing the phenomena.
Data over the years from NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope suggests that light from the star dims irregularly, and some scientists say that the recent light show may be the result of comet swarms passing through the light field during Kepler’s observations.
However, a team of scientists from Penn State caused an international stir when they suggested that the light could be from construction of a massive alien megastructure being built around the distant star.
A long-held theory I astronomy suggests that building a structure around a star called a Dyson Sphere could capture energy that could then be used for industrial development. The Penn State team claims that the light emanations from KIC 8462852 match what would be expected if super-intelligent aliens were building such a device.
