Woman Gets Life for Kidnapping Disabled to Steal Their Money

A woman in Philadelphia was sentenced to life imprisonment for holding mentally disabled adults captive for over 10 years in order to steal their Social Security checks.

A Philadelphia woman was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday for kidnapping mentally disabled people and holding them prisoner in her basement so that she could steal their disability checks every month. Linda Weston, 55, pleaded guilty to 195 counts. The counts against her included kidnapping, fraud, sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and murder.

When she was sentenced by the judge, Weston just said that she was a believer in her God and that her God knows what happened. The Judge in her case, Cynthia Rufe replied, “There are a lot of people in this courtroom that know what happened, too,” reported The New York Times. Weston pleaded guilty in order to be sentenced to life.

Weston had held people in the basement of her Philadelphia home as well as in several other states. Two of her victims died while they were being held in captivity. Weston’s lawyers said that she wanted to plead guilty for the sake of her children.

The case against her broke and became public in 2011 when Weston’s landlord entered her home and discovered four people in the dingy and squalid boiler room of her home. The landlord saw that one man had been actually chained to the boiler itself. Weston was accused of tricking, cajoling or intimidating mentally disabled people into designating her as their caretaker so that she could collect their monthly disability check. Weston is said to have operated in this manner for a decade and collected over $200,000 in Social Security checks during that time.

Weston allegedly made two of her females captives work as prostitutes because she wanted more money. Her prisoners included six adults and four young children over that time. She generally kept them sedated with drugs-laced food and water. If any of them showed resistance, tried to escape or stole food, Weston would use violence against them. She would beat them with sticks, baseball bats and hammers.
