San Diego SWAT Teams Capture Heavily Armed Gunman Without Injury

San Diego police SWAT teams captured a heavily armed gunman who had been shooting at the police. The incident forced the closing of the nearby international airport in San Diego.

The San Diego police department took a heavily-armed gunman into custody on Thursday after the man had shot at police officers who were answering a domestic violence call at the apartment of the gunman’s girlfriend. Because the San Diego police SWAT teams and the gunman were so close to San Diego’s international airport, the airport ended up canceling flights until the ordeal had ended.

Traffic at the San Diego international airport has resumed it normal schedule, according to Reuters. The police arrested Titus Colbert, 33, and charged him with the attempted murder of a police officer. Colbert is a convicted drug dealer and a notorious gang member. His brother is currently incarcerated on death row for a crime spree that left three people dead.

Police were called to his girlfriend’s condo after he had entered it without her direct permission. When the police arrived, Colbert began firing through the front door at the police. The nearby international airport shut down its operations because the girlfriend’s condo was located on the roof and airport officials were worried about stray bullets.

The police called for heavily-armed backup. Four SWAT teams with snipers arrived and set themselves up on either side of the front door that was now riddled with bullet holes. All of the police had all of the windows and entryways covered and waited it out for many hours. According to witnesses, police used both tear gas as well as flash bang grenades in an effort to flush Colbert out into the open.

After five hours, Colbert surrendered to police. The police found him armed with a pistol and an AK 47. Two local schools were locked down during that time and all neighbors were ordered to stay inside their homes by police. Traffic has resumed its normal patterns at the airport and police officials will arraign Colbert at a later time.
