Justin Trudeau was sworn in as Canada’s new prime minister on Wednesday. He becomes the country’s 23rd prime minister, and the first to represent Generation X. His father, Pierre Trudeau, was Canada’s 15th prime minister and served from 1968-1984.
Trudeau, 43, is of the Liberal Party, who are now poised to run a government that had been led for 10 years by Conservative party prime minister Stephen Harper. Trudeau has served as a member of the Canadian Parliament since 2008 and is a former schoolteacher. He also becomes Canada’s second youngest prime minister in history, according to The Los Angeles Times. Born on Christmas Day in 1971, he hopes to restore the proud Liberal traditions that had marked his father’s terms of service to the country.
Women make up half of his cabinet and most of his cabinet members are between the ages of 35-50. Trudeau believes that he now has a cabinet truly representative of Canada, and says that he expects to rule by cabinet. For the first time in the history of the country the general public was invited to come and watch the swearing in ceremony at the 79-acre spread of Rideau Hall.
Trudeau will live on the Rideau grounds with his wife and three young children. It will be another Canadian history first as he will be the first prime minister to live on the grounds in the 22-room “cottage.” He was asked why he thought it was so important for half of the cabinet to be made up of women and he replied, “Because it’s 2015.”
Perhaps it seemed to be his destiny to be the prime minister of Canada. In April 1971, President of the United States Richard Nixon went to Ottawa on an official state visit to talk with his father who was, then, the prime minister. It has been told that Richard Nixon looked down on the four-month old Justin. Nixon raised a glass and proposed a toast. He nodded toward the four-month old Justin and said; “To the future Prime Minister of Canada.”
