Man stabbed five people on the campus, two of whom were students.
Following an attack on five people, four of whom were students, Police at UC Merced shot and killed a student on Wednesday after he allegedly stabbed five people.
The LA Times reports that the rampage occurred around 8:00 AM, in a classroom and office building near the center of the campus. The attack spread as the student ran outside the building to a pedestrian bridge that connects two sections of the campus. He was brought down there by officers.
UC Merced closed the campus after the incident. The school is offering counseling services and transportation for those in need. A spokesperson for the school emphasized that the school is doing everything they can for families to make sure everyone is safe.
One of the victims was a 31-year-old construction worker who was working with two others on a renovation project for the school. The worker, Byron Price, heard what he thought was a fight outside the room he was working in. When he opened the door, he was attacked. Price is expected to live.
According to the school, out of the five victims, two were airlifted to hospitals. All the victims were still conscious after they were attacked.
A student at the school, Daniel Garcia-Ceja, was met with a police barricade when attempting to cross the pedestrian bridge, on his way to class. He was told by friends that police had shot and killed someone who had a knife. Some said they had seen the man approaching students with a knife.
The school was mostly on lock-down, with some students lingering to discuss what happened.
