A new research study has determined that the Black Millennial population in the country sees things very differently with regard to police and gun violence as well as the fairness of the justice system.
A recent research study was carried out at the University of Chicago in an effort to try and get a handle on the American Millennial generation. Millennials are, generally, classified as being between the ages of 18-30. More specifically, the study was targeting the Black Millennial population in the country. The report is called “Black Millennials in America” and it has uncovered some distinct differences in the way the races perceive the police, the court systems, and guns.
The study was released on Wednesday and it attempted to take the pulse of young Americans in the wake of the recent killings of young Black men in Baltimore, Florida, and Ferguson, Missouri. From those incidents the Black Lives Matter movement has sprung up and begun to have influence on the thinking of many Millennials especially in America’s Black communities, according to The Huffington Post.
In a previous study, Millennials were asked: “Have you or anyone you know experienced harassment or violence at the hands of the police?” For Black Millennials, 54.4 percent answered in the affirmative to the question while 25 percent of Latins, 33 percent of Whites, and 28 percent of Asian Millennials did.
Despite much of America being at odds with the police, there were still encouraging responses from Millennials with regard to the police in general. For Blacks, 71 percent replied that they really do think the police are in their neighborhoods to protect them from crime. For Latins, 76 percent agreed along with 85 percent of Whites, and 89 percent of Asians.
With regard to gun ownership and gun violence, 22 percent of the Black Millennials said they personally knew someone in the last year that was a victim of some manner of gun violence while only 14 percent of Latins and 8 percent of Whites did.
Only 26 percent of Blacks believe that the legal system is fair and equal to everyone while 41 percent of Whites, 36 percent of Latins, and 38 percent of Asians do.
