Agreement with Stewart just the latest in a growing amount of exclusive HBO streaming content.
Former The Daily Show host Jon Stewart has signed a four year deal with HBO. The agreement focuses on “short-form” digital content, created for the channel’s streaming options HBO Go and HBO Now.
Time reports that while the agreement is not likely the project fans of Stewart were hoping for, it allows an opportunity for Stewart to take on new roles, while allowing the network to figure out “its next steps”
As streaming has become more popular, HBO has had to adjust to a changing market they once dominated. As a top player in cables subscription, the channel is taking the opportunity to take chances on content that differs from that of standard cable TV.
HBO has made a handful of new acquisitions and agreements that hint toward a greater variety of on-demand, streamed programming. From Sesame Street to pending projects with Vice, to former ESPN star Bill Simmons, the network is making efforts to be ahead of the growing competitive market of subscription streaming.
Stewart’s videos are expected to update multiple times a day, HBO is aggressively attempting to branch beyond being just a cable network. The streaming market is a numbers game, and the game is to have as many subscribers as possible. However, HBO is expected to have a leg up on the competition by utilizing names from cable past in a modern, easily digestible format.
