POP NEWS: Swift Sued Over Lyrics; One Direction Will be Taking a Hiatus

Taylor Swift is hit with a lawsuit over the lyrics of her current hit and One Direction has announced they will be taking some time off to pursue solo projects.

Singer-songwriter and performer, Taylor Swift, is being sued by R&B singer Jesse Braham or $42 million claiming she stole lyrics from him. The suit claims that Swift’s lyrics from her song “Shake it Off” were stolen from a 2013 song penned by Braham entitled “Haters Gone Gate”. In addition to the millions he is suing for, Braham also wants his name listed on the Swift song as a writer.

Swift’s representatives have not commented on the suit, according to the BBC. “Shake it Off” is from Swift’s new CD entitled “1989” and it shot straight to the top of the music charts when it was released. Her YouTube video of the song has been watched more than one billion times. The songs are unalike musically and the lyrics, while perhaps similar, are in no way identical.

Braham commented in the press that it was impossible for Swift to have written the song independently without stealing lyrics from his previous 2013 song. He also stated that he had talked with Swift’s record label a few times about the lyrics.

One of the most popular and successful all boy singing groups of all time, One Direction, recently announced that they will be taking a hiatus beginning in March of 2016. The group announced that the four group members are looking to go their own ways creatively for a while and it may be a year or so before they reform, reports People Magazine.

The all boy group now consists of four members since the fifth, Zayn Malikleft, left the group last March simply saying he left because “I can’t do that anymore. It’s not the real me.” The group now has its four remaining members left to carry on: Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan.

Their fifth album is due for release before the end of the year. The group announced that there would be no touring to promote the new album. They will promote the album until the end of February 2016, but a tour, they say, is out of the question.
