Over 160,000 pounds of beef under recall, following E. coli outbreak

Contamination found during USDA conducted routine inspection.

According to the U.S Department of Agriculture, a meat company in Nebraska is recalling 167,427 pounds of ground beef for possible E. coli contamination.

ABC News reports that a sample of products from All American Meats Inc. tested positive for E. coli during a routine test from the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. The beef affected was produced October 16th with a sell-by date of November 3rd. No reports of reactions to consuming the meat have been reported, according to a news release from the USDA.

The affected meat was sold in 60 and 80 pound packages, and shipped to retail locations around the country. The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service will release a list of stores that carried the contaminated meat on its website.

The USDA and All American Meats Inc. have not responded to requests for comment on the matter. The USDA is concerned that people are storing the contaminated meat in their freezers. Products affected are marked with an establishment number, “EST. 20420” is the number for the potentially contaminated products.

Consumers are being urged to not consume the contaminated meat, and to dispose of or return the affected products. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service conduct routine checks to ensure customers are informed about potential recalls, and additionally help to ensure the contaminated product will not appear on shelves again.

The USDA advises consumers to only consume ground beef after it has been cooked at a temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. The announcement of the recall comes on the heels of an E. coli outbreak in Chipotle restaurants in Washington and Oregon. It is unclear if the two recalls are related.
