New Star Trek series in development for 2017

New series will feature new characters, have no connection to 2016 film.

A new Star Trek series is heading to television, for the first time in over a decade. The series, which follows the adventures of the crew aboard the Starship Enterprise, will debut in 2017, according to CBS, Monday. The new Star Trek series will have its introduction on the network, but will be primarily shown on a digital subscription service.

The New York Times reports that the new series will focus on new characters, new worlds, and new civilizations, while still maintaining the themes possessed by previous installments since the beginning.

Alex Kurtzman, who served as a writer and producer in the 2009 film reboot of Star Trek and its sequel Star Trek Into Darkness is the executive producer for the project. Kurtzman also worked on other sci-fi staples like Fringe, Sleepy Hollow, and Xena: Warrior Princess.

The original Star Trek ran from 1966-1969 and chronicled the adventures of Capt. Kirk, Mr. Spock, and the crew of the Enterprise. Star Trek received critical acclaim for its focus on social themes of the era, rather than the low-tech special effects of the time period.

Feature films followed the success of the show, with additional T.V spin-offs to follow. Each new series focused on different crews in different time periods.

CBS has stated that the new series will begin in early 2017, with a televised “special preview” episode. The preview, and all following episodes would then be released on CBS All Access, the network’s video subscription service.

A new Star Trek film, titled Star Trek Beyond is planned for Summer 2016, but CBS has stated that the film has no connection to the new TV series.

Star Trek will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year.
