A woman's desire to pet a tiger was fulfilled and it, also, landed her in the hospital with severe injuries to her hand.
A Nebraska woman got the most surprising of Halloween treats. Jacqueline Eide, 33, wandered into the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha on Halloween night because, she told police, she wanted to “pet a tiger.” Eide somehow circumvented the zoo’s security apparatus and headed for the tiger cage containing a Malayan tiger named Mai.
She reached in to pat Mai and was bitten on her hand. She was rushed to the hospital where it is has been determined that she may end up losing the fingers on her hand, according to CNN. Hospital staff said she was uncooperative and belligerent and it seemed obvious to them that she was somehow intoxicated. Police arrested her and charged her with criminal trespass.
Eide has a past record of several convictions for reckless behavior. The zoo authorities commented that two individuals were found to be trespassing and one was bitten by the 18 year old Malayan tiger, Mai. Mai only has three legs and, at 18 years of age, is considered old in tiger years. She came to the Omaha, Nebraska zoo after she was freed from a poachers trap in Malaysia. Her leg was so severely damaged by the trap that it had to be amputated.
Mai underwent the surgery when she was two years old and after rehabilitation she ended up at the Dooly Zoo in Omaha. She has been quite a home in Omaha and has led a successful life even with only three legs. She has raised three litters of cubs at the zoo. She is friendly, zoo officials say, but can still be a bit wary around humans as all wild animals tend to be.
When Eide reached in to touch Mai, the tiger responded in the natural way any wild animal might. Zoo authorities stated that the safety of their visitors has always been their top priority and will remain so. They have a plethora of security systems including computer controlled locks as well as the standard cameras all around the grounds.
Many people wrote the zoo urging them not to take the incident out on Mai. So many of them were angry because animals are usually killed if they attack a human. The zoo realized that it was in not Mai’s fault. They publicly informed everyone that Mai would remain on display and be allowed to live her life as before.
