Construction Spending Rose in September; Highest Level Since 2008

Construction spending in the country was up in September for both the private and public sectors. Analysts are looking at this as a solid sign that the recovery continues to make progress.

Construction spending in the United States was way up in September signaling that the economy may be making some serious moves with regard to recovery. Spending on both private and public buildings increased which may mean the recent Gross Domestic Product figures may have to be revised upward.

Construction spending in the country was up a substantial 0.6 percent to $1.9 trillion in September. The Commerce Department also reported that this was the highest monthly increase in construction spending since March of 2008, nearly seven and a half years ago, according to Reuters.

The numbers have been most encouraging to economists and financial analysts. So far this year, construction spending in the country has risen over the previous month. Analysts see this as a good sign that the economy may be strengthening despite other factors that are reporting that it is stagnating. The experts believe it remains a positive sign despite businesses not hiring, a sluggish world economy, and a wary attitude with regard to consumer spending.

Spending in construction was up 14.1 percent over September of 2014. Last week, when the federal government released it’s GDP report, the estimates it made on construction spending came in a little lower. In that GDP report, the government had stated that the economy grew an extremely weak 1.5 percent for the third quarter and that businesses were doing little else than trying to reduce inventories.

Consumer confidence seemed to take a dive in the last couple of months as retailers hope it suddenly gains some momentum as the annual holiday spending season approaches. Most retailers in the country make as much as 70 percent of their annual revenue at the holiday season. The government will release factory orders and production numbers early next week but no one seems all that optimistic for the manufacturing sector of the economy.

For September, private construction spending rose a healthy 1.9 percent which is the highest level it has been since January of 2008.
