Hydrogen fuel cells and new fueling options bring hydrogen-power closer to reality.
Car makers have been promising practical, hydrogen-powered cars for awhile. Now Honda’s latest hydrogen model is giving some experts hope that a consumer-friendly hydrogen future may be closer than they previously thought.
This week, at the Tokyo Motor Show, Honda unveiled its Clarity hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, according to Forbes. The car comes in at one-tenth of the price tag of previous hydrogen-powered models, and the car’s much more compact drive train means that the hydrogen system can be used in a wide range of Honda vehicles.
In addition, the car can travel more than 400 miles on a tank, and takes just minutes to refill. The car sports two tanks, a small one under the back seat and a larger one in the back. Conscious consumers desire hydrogen which creates no pollution and can be produced with low energy inputs.
But hydrogen power stations are still few and far between, even in California where government support to auto maker and hydrogen fuel providers has helped finance installations of hydrogen fuel stations.
Now Honda has an answer for that problem as well. The company’s “Smart Hydrogen Station” will enable owners to produce their own hydrogen at home. Honda is also partnering with GM to produce advanced fuel cell vehicles and cheaper hydrogen storage options.
The Honda Clarity will be on the market in the spring, with pricing expected to be in the mid $60,000’s.
