Citing threats of violence, music festival cancels discussions on gaming and sexual harassment.
The gaming industry has been struggling with sexual harassment and other charges relating to the lack of diversity and sensitivity among players. Now threats of violence have led a leading music and social change conference to cancel two planned panel discussions on the issues.
The SXSW music festival to be held in Austin in March 2016 will not host the diversity talks, according to the Los Angeles Times. No plans have been announced to replace the panels with other events around the thorny issues.
The SXSW notice announcing the cancellation of the panels was posted online by a panel organizer from the Online Abuse Prevention Initiative, which had planned to present on a panel called “Level Up: Overcoming Harassment in Games” that intended to discuss ways to address online harassment.
The panel’s organizers stressed the discussion was not intended to relate to gamergate, the 2014 online spread of attacks against women in the gaming industry.
The other session, called “SavePoint: A Discussion on the Gaming Community,” raised red flags to many, as it appeared to be organized by gamergate sympathizers from a group calling itself the Open Gaming Society.
This is not the first time that threats of violence have occasioned attempts to discuss sexism among gamers. Last year, Utah State University cancelled a talk by a critic of the industry following a violent threat.
