A Dynamic International Airways 767 exploded into flames on Thursday on the runway of the international airport in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The plane was taxing and preparing for takeoff when it exploded and caught fire. The plane was scheduled to fly to Caracas, Venezuela.
Fire crews raced to the plane and doused it with white foam while rescue crews evacuated the passengers and crew. Seven people are reported to be injured, according to Reuters. Rescue crews sent a reported fourteen people to a local hospital. There were 101 passengers on the flight bound for Venezuela. Only one person is reported to be suffering from serious injuries. No one is certain at this time if the injuries had occurred from the evacuation of the plane or from the explosion and the fire. One passenger has severe burns and a total of 24 people were evaluated by medical personnel.
As the Dynamic Airways Flight 405 taxied down the runway for takeoff, one of its engines ignited and caught on fire. This happened at around 12:30 PM Eastern in Fort Lauderdale. The airport in Fort Lauderdale only has two runways so airport operations have been temporarily shut down and flight have been canceled. There are no departures until further notice and all incoming arrivals have been sent to other airports in the region.
The airport authorities stated that they are expecting to open as soon as they can. Dynamic, based in North Carolina, stated that the crew knew about the engine as they were taxiing for takeoff. The company said that the crew followed all emergency procedures for such a situation. The FAA had made an inspection and has reported that the fire to the engine was caused by a fuel leak in the engine.
Dynamic Airways says that it is conducting its own internal investigation of the incident. According to the company, Dynamic Airways has been flying the large wide body jets since 2009.
