18-year-old shot self following confrontation, police say

Sources say gunshot was self-inflicted, victim was suicidal.

Missouri authorities are looking into the death of an 18-year-old, that followed an exchange of gunfire with police, Thursday. St. Louis police say that the officer did not strike the young man, despite the fact his father questioning accounts that his son killed himself.

Following a confrontation with a Normandy officer, Amonderez Green died early Thursday. Police say he and an officer exchanged shots, but neither were struck. They say Green was suicidal, and ran from police before he shot himself, ABC News reports.

Normandy police are requesting that St. Louis police investigate the incident. The death has not officially been ruled a suicide, as an autopsy and ballistics report are still pending. A spokesperson for the Normandy police force affirms that Green was not struck by an officer’s bullet.

Jermell Simpson, Green’s father, says that the suggestion of suicide is a “total lie.” The officer was placed on paid administrative leave, pending the looming investigation. Simpson says that while his son was upset before the shooting, relatives told officers that they “had it covered.”

Around 2 PM Wednesday, family of Green called 911 seeking “police and medical intervention”. Dispatchers will not release the audio of the 911 call, due to the pending investigation. When met by police, Green pulled out a .38 caliber revolver and fired it at the officer. The officer then attempted to subdue him with a stun gun, then pulled out his gun and fired three shots, all of which missed, according to a spokesperson.

Youtube videos surfaced questioning the suicide claim, with some witnesses saying officers shot Green. One witness, however, when approached said she would no longer speak about the topic, as comments she had made were misconstrued.

According to emergency room workers, the only injury Green had was the self inflicted gunshot wound. Officers in Normandy do not wear body cameras, despite push from protesters following the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, last year.
