Wal-Mart joins Amazon and Google in the drive towards home delivery by unmanned aircraft.
Both Amazon and Google have told federal authorities they want to start using drones for home delivery of packages, as well as for other purposes. Now another major retailer wants to join the drive for home delivery via unmanned aircraft.
This week, Wal-Mart filed documents requesting permission to begin testing the use drones, according to Reuters. The company’s filing explains that the retailer wants permission to run pilot programs that would include using drones to aid its warehouse inventory and distribution processes.
Wal-Mart distribution centers often have hundreds of trailers filled with merchandise, so drones could enable workers to more quickly assess the contents of each trailer.
Wal-Mart also asked the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) for permission to use drones for curbside pickup outside of their retail locations and for home delivery. The company said it hopes to test home delivery options in small, residential areas where residents have granted permission for the flights.
Drones would then deliver groceries from company trucks parked in a central location.
The retail giant says it has been experimenting with drones used indoors for several months. A Wal-Mart spokesman said that the company would be ready to use drones for deliveries and other functions once their testing is complete and regulations allow commercial flights.
In June the FAA said its drone regulations would be finalized within a year.
