Home brew company wants your beer recipes

Sell your beer and collect royalties with the new Pico home brewing machine.

Home brewing has taken off in recent years, but many would-be brewers have been intimidated by the complex process and the beer-making equipment needs. Now a home brewing company is making it simple to brew, and even sell, your own craft beer.

The technology company PicoBrew introduced its first home brewing machine, the Picobrew Zymatic, last year, according to Forbes. But for some, the Zymatic still wasn’t easy or cheap enough to make home brewing attractive.

Now the company is offering a more affordable and even easier to use model, the Pico, in hopes of making home brewing more accessible. The second generation model will be sold for just under $1,000, half the price of the original, and is available on Kickstarter to early investors for around $550.

The new model mimics Keurig coffee makers in that it uses pre-measured “Pico-Paks” of beer-making ingredients. Using recipes from about fifty beer makers, Pico users can follow the easy steps and use the Pico-Paks to make their own beer.

In addition, home brewers who craft with their own recipes can submit their beer creations to the company, which will then make and distribute Pico-Paks designed for making that product. Recipe developers will receive a royalty from each purchase, creating an entire new distribution model for craft beer makers.

Up until now, the craft brewing industry has been forced to rely on distribution networks that are typically controlled by the major beer companies. Pico is hoping to create a market that positions craft beer makers as more like app developers, with the company serving as the middleman between developers and consumers.
